Experiment # 7

  • E7.1 Name:

  • ARM mbed / FRDM - Communications in GSM networks

  • E7.2 Overview / Purpose:

  • The laboratory experiment aims to offer an option to develop an active core able to communicate in GSM networks for M2M applications. At the end of the lab, detailed information will be provided on the use of GSM modems and AT commands to develop capabilities to manage SMS on a mobile network.

  • E7.3 Resources:

  • Mbed / FRDM platform, Reversed Daddy-to-Speech Communications Cable, GSM / GPRS GSM Modem, connection at www.mbed.org, WINDOWS -TTY Terminal Emulator.

  • E7.4 Program example:

  • Prototype program

  • E7.5 Experiment Run / Tracking Mode:

  • - Connect the GSM modem to PC-Com1 / 2. Using the TTY terminal program tests AT commands for sending SMS;

    - Enter a prototype program into a telephone number;

    - Connect the FRDM system to PC and transfer the HEX prototype program file;

    - The execution of the prototype program is monitored on the FRDM connected to the GSM modem;

    - The cable configuration between the FRDM and the GSM modem is being tracked;

    - Solving the proposed problems;

  • E7.6 Proposed Issues:

    • 1. Make a program sequence that will send SMS to 2 phone numbers;

    • 2. Make a program sequence that will send an SMS with the value of the microcontroller's power supply voltage;

    • 3. Make a program sequence that allows viewing of the AT commands sent to the modem on the terminal application;

    • 4. Emphasize the electromagnetic disturbances introduced by the modem's GSM modem;

    • 5. Make a program that will transmit AT commands to the GSM modem without using delay functions;

  • E7.7 The experiment can be extended to:

  • - Implementation of telemetry applications with GSM;
    - Making active nodes for the Internet of Things;
    - Developing applications on M2M structures;
    - Interconnection at very large equipment distances;
